About the role

As the Principal Systems Engineer, your role sits in the Systems Engineering team. You will accountable for leading the engineering activities for all Systems on projects. You will be responsible for driving the overall integrated performance and optimised whole life cost of the Systems through appropriate risk-based assurance.

This role may also include working on projects/bids internationally for Egis Transport Solution or other Egis subsidiaries, including travel within the UK and Ireland.

Job description

Duties & responsibilities

  • Serve as technical expert to take rail systems decisions, review design proposals for technical solutions, make recommendations, resolve technical clashes, etc.
  • Manage the review of High-Speed Rail preliminary and detailed designs and ensuring compliance with client requirements.
  • Manage a team of local and international rail systems experts as part of the supervision team whilst also managing the Contractors in accordance with client requirements.
  • Responsible for the following disciplines: O&M, Rolling Stock, Signalling, Telecoms, Centralised Control, Power Supply, SCADA, OCS, AFC, Track and Depot.
  • Prepare and deliver project monthly and weekly reports on systems design status, problems, concerns and other matters.
  • Ensuring that risks within the systems designs and installation tasks are identified, controlled and mitigated.
  • Ensure that all design and implementation activities are performed with highest safety and quality culture in mind and with the "best" industry practice.
  • Responsible for supporting the development and preparation of tenders and bids
  • Developing any appropriate Systems Engineering processes for projects.
  • Leadership of a team of the Systems Engineers which will include (but not limited to):

a.      Requirements Engineering (RE).

b.      PRAM.

c.      Systems Modelling.

d.      Systems Integration (SI).

e.      Value management Engineering

f.       Configuration and Change Control Management (CM & CC).

g.      Verification and Validation (V&V).

  • Delivery of Systems Engineering Package within time and budget.
  • Working collaboratively and interfacing with Project teams
  • Following resource competence framework For Systems Engineering and collaborating on a staffing plan
  • Carrying out and maintaining an effective relationship with all external parties.


Qualifications, Skills, Experience & Attributes


Essential (minimum requirement for interview)

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant field, e.g., BEng in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, e.g., an HNC/HND.
  • Broad experience of leading Engineering in a complex, safety focussed and regulated organisation with multiple complex interfaces
  • Significant experience of working in the railway industry including on High Speed projects.
  • Experience of working within relevant UK rail industry legislation and standards.
  • Experience in technical delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, desirable experience on major projects.


Desirables (not essential, but highly advantageous)

  • Chartered Engineer of a related institute, e.g., IET.
  • A technical expert in at least one of the System’s Disciplines, have a good working knowledge of the others and the integrated Railway System.
