Job description

Duties & responsibilities

  • Act as technical authority for OLE design works.
  • Undertake Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) roles for OLE design in accordance with Network Rail standards.
  • Develop effective conceptual, outline and detailed design for OLE engineering solutions
  • Keep up to date with current NR, RSSB, LRSSB and British standards relevant to OLE design
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
  • Carry out site surveys, identify risks and hazards and provide appropriate reporting
  • Progress projects through preliminary and detailed design with emphasis on client requirements and innovation.
  • Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and oversee drawing production
  • Prepare and check technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of interest and tenders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations.


Qualifications, Skills, Experience & Attributes

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant field, e.g., BEng in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, e.g., an HNC/HND.
  • Chartered Engineer or approaching CEng or IEng status having completed the necessary training requirements;
  • Good experience of the co-ordination of the NR rail design process and team management.
  • Experience of statutory processes – European Standards, CDM, ORR guidance, HSE, Group Standards, Network Rail standards, light rail safety verification process.
  • Thorough understanding of interfaces between overhead line systems and other rail and non-rail assets
  • Good communication skills dealing with clients, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public
  • Knowledge of Engineering / System Assurance requirements - desirable 
  • Working knowledge of Micro station for production of both GA's and schematics in conjunction with CAD team - desirable 
  • Knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation and CDM Regulations  - desirable
  • Experience of system engineering concepts and safety management - desirable
