We are at an incredibly exciting time of expansion  and are looking for a Senior Principal Design Engineer to play an integral role in the development of our delivery capability, playing a key role in the design team and supporting technical functions throughout our rail works in the UK 

Job description

As the Senior Principal Design Engineer you will -support internal and external Client technical teams by fulfilling the Principal Designer Representative role on projects, ensuring Principal Designer duties are adequately discharged under the CDM Regulations. You will lead in carrying out project safety reviews, ensuring the application of the principles of prevention, and preparing pre-construction information and health and safety files.
 
The role will nominally be based in Cardiff or Bristol. Egis promote flexible working so homeworking is common amongst the team. The role will also require regular site visits in South Wales to support an existing contract. 
 
This role is within our transportation team so would work across light rail, conventional heavy rail, and highspeed rail projects. Key activities that the role will require: 

 

  • Prepare, manage and monitor project-level CDM plans and strategies 
  • Assist the Client in identifying and obtaining existing pre-construction information and managing its collation 
  • Review and analyse existing information and identify elements where information is missing/required
  • Review and comment on designers’ hazard & risk information / support the project with management of the hazard register, including support at HazID workshops 
  • Work closely alongside designers and support them in identifying and eliminating or controlling foreseeable risks to the health and safety of others 
  • Work closely with Clients / Project Managers to guide them in producing designs that are safe to build and maintain 
  • Assist in the review of Construction Phase Plans and WPPs 
  • Assist in the preparation of the Health and Safety File and Operation and Maintenance file 
  • Assist in the preparation of Asset Management Plans and H&S hand back production 
  • Liaise with contractors ensuring they are complying with the project requirements regarding CDM 
  • Undertake site visits and inspections 
  • Report writing 
  • Competency assessment of team members  
  • Support the Bid Manager in preparing response to bids 

 

This role may also include working on projects internationally for EGIS Transport Solutions or other EGIS subsidiaries.

Profile

Essential: 

  • Experience of undertaking the Principal Designer, or similar CEM/DPE/CRE, role 
  • Significant knowledge and experience of H&S legislation and best practice with respect to Construction and Design Management 
  • Extensive experience working within the construction industry, with some of this time spent within rail  
  • Good knowledge of UK design standards, such as Network Rail, HS2 and TfL 
  • Experience in working in accordance with NR/L2/RSE/02009 Engineering Management for Projects 
  • Proven capability in coordinating and managing design interfaces and integration processes 
  • Excellent client-facing and communication skills 
    Keen to work in a collaborative environment 
  • Ability to be assertive, contribute to and influence meetings 
  • Experience of working in an engineering production environment 
  • A clear understanding of a multi-disciplinary design approach and the ability to coordinate clients and designers through the project lifecycle ensuring CDM duties are met 
  • An ability to train and upskill team members 
  • Experience of supporting the organisation to build and grow 
  • Hold, or working towards an accepted discipline licence 
  • Understand and ensure compliance with other relevant legislation such as HASAW, Temporary Works, Manual Handling etc.

 
Desirable: 

  • BSc or similar Bachelor Degree (BA, BEng) or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience 
  • Chartered Engineer, Chartered Architect, Incorporated Engingnised professional qualification in Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH Construction Certificate) 
  • Certified Membership of APS, IOSH or ICE H&S Register 
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) AC/DC 
  • Good working knowledge of CSM regulations
