Mission & main activities

We are currently expanding in the UK and Ireland, growing our business and our team. One of the exciting projects the Senior Power Supply Engineer will work on relates to the execution of the Birmingham tramway network extension contract, within our partnership with The Midlands Metro Alliance. The aim of this once-renewable five-year contract is to construct 4 km of new line in the coming three years (three extensions) and an additional 15 km in the following five years (two additional lines).

Job description


The Senior Power Supply Engineer sits in the Programme Engineering team and leads/participates in Power Supply Engineering activities, in particular those related to the Traction Power Network. 

This role may also include working on projects internationally for Egis Rail or other Egis subsidiaries.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role are: 

  • Lead the traction power systems design for LRT DC based rail systems.
  • Act as technical authority for electrical power related and traction power related matter.
  • Produce relevant reports on design matters and advise other disciplines on interface and integration issues.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of traction power supply principles including an understanding of major feeding and sectioning principles.
  • Coordinate DNO supply connections and substation interfaces on behalf of clients.
  • Perform and organise traction power substation layout detailed design, calculate cable sizing, design earthing and bonding, and carry out LV protection calculations.
  • Contribute to the production and traction power simulations, and collect the data for their execution; produce relevant assessment reports
  • Provide on-site design support during the construction and T&C phases of traction power substations.
  • Ensure that engineering requirements are robust and baselined, and that designs are verifiable and validated.
  • Ensure that designs are carried out as per defined processes to assure the quality of the output, that they are interfaced to and integrated with other disciplines, and that they are compliant with all relevant safety related obligations e.g., CDM regulations, Risk Assessments etc.
  • Assess correct safety practice during works and consult teams accordingly.

You may be required to undertake other such duties as the organisation may reasonably require.



Essential knowledge, qualifications and experience:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant field, e.g., BEng in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, e.g., an HNC/HND.
  • Chartered Engineer of a related institute, e.g., IET.
  • Significant experience in traction power design within the LRT/rail sector.
  • Experience with design, project management and/or simulation/modelling tools, e.g., BIM software, ProjectWise, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Deep knowledge of medium voltage networks and AC/DC rectifiers, transformers and
  • HV/DC switchgear construction and installation methods.
  • Experience of producing and checking a wide variety of traction power design details.
  • Experience of system engineering concepts and safety management.
  • A strong industry knowledge of the basic equipment suppliers (in particular, knowledge of the UK market is a plus)
  • Strong communication and people skills; the successful candidate will be required to give presentations to clients, for example.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills, able to take initiative, and comfortable when ambiguity arises.
  • Experience of supporting the organisation to build and grow successfully.

Desirable knowledge and experience:

  • Experience in 750v or 1500v DC systems and catenary installations (knowledge of AC systems and particularly Network Rail will be a distinct advantage).
  • Experience in site acceptance testing and commissioning of traction power substations.
  • Holder of all necessary licenses to visit and do operations within traction substations.
  • Knowledge of other railway LV systems including stop power supplies and signalling power
  • supplies.
  • Experience in traction power related measurements and site tests.
  • Knowledge of EMC/EMI standards and legislation.
  • Able to produce BOM for traction substation buildings or support the procurement team if requested.
