About the role
As the Principal Power Supply Engineer, your role sits in the Systems Engineering team and leads/participates in Electrification and Plant systems delivery team, coordinating Power Supply Engineering activities, in particular those related to the Traction Power Network, Medium Power Network and Low Voltage Network.
This role may also include working on projects/bids internationally for Egis Transport Solution or other Egis subsidiaries.
Duties & responsibilities
- Lead the power supply systems design (Traction, MV, LV) for E&P related activities, including light rail transit DC based rail systems.
- Act as technical authority for electrical power related and traction power related matter.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of traction power supply principles including an understanding of major feeding and sectioning principles.
- Coordinate and apply for DNO supply connections and substation interfaces on behalf of clients.
- Perform and organise traction power substation layout detailed design, calculate cable sizing, design earthing and bonding, and carry out LV protection calculations, including technical specification for Substation 33kV, 22kV, etc.
- Manage the allocated team to produce single line diagram, substation layout, power balance, etc.
- Have a working knowledge/experience of EMI, EMC in relation to power applications. Preparation of protection philosophy scheme, protection SLD, interlocking/inter-tripping scheme.
- Provide on-site design support during the construction and T&C phases of traction power substations and assess safety practice during works .
- Discharge safety responsibilities in relation to CDM Regulations, Health and Safety legislation
Qualifications, Skills, Experience & Attributes
- Right to Work in the UK
- Educated to degree level in a relevant field, e.g., BEng in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, e.g., an HNC/HND.
- Significant experience in traction power design within the LRT/rail sector. Experience in 750v or 1500v DC systems and catenary systems.
- Experience in technical delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, desirable experience on major projects.
- Experience with design, project management and/or simulation/modelling tools, e.g., BIM software, Project Wise, AutoCAD, ETAP, etc.
Desirables (advantageous)
- Chartered Engineer of a related institute, e.g., IET.
- Knowledge of 1x25kV or 2x25 kV AC systems and particularly Network Rail will be a distinct advantage.
- Experience in site acceptance testing and commissioning of traction power substations.
- Holder of all necessary licenses to visit and do operations within traction substations.
- Knowledge of other railway LV systems including stop power supplies and signalling power supplies.
- Knowledge of EMC/EMI standards and legislation.
